diving the scuba junkie way

waves

Scuba Junkie is known across the world for being professional, safe and fun! Our high quality and well trained crew are not only dedicated to ensuring you have the best dive trip ever but also to protecting our marine world.

Dive groups are always kept small with no more than 4 divers per groups, groups are organised according to certification and experience level so you can be safe in the knowledge you’ll be diving with people of similar level as you.

At the heart of Scuba Junkie lies a desire to protect our marine world. We always dive in a way that aims to reduce negative impacts as much as possible. Our dive guides will give full briefings on how to passively interact with marine life to have longer and more memorable experiences.

the diving day

the diving day

We start the day fairly early. We aim to be in the Komodo National Park and diving before other day trip boats from Labuan Bajo. By getting into the park early we then have flexibility should we need to adjust the dive plan for the day and also means we are less likely to see any other divers whilst underwater!

The night before your diving day we’ll take your breakfast order, which will be served on the boat - choose from pancakes (a firm favourite), omelette, scrambled eggs (or tofu) or fried eggs. Enjoy your delicious breakfast on the way to your first dive. Of course, we also have tea, coffee and water on the boats as well.

As you eat breakfast enjoy the stunning scenery of the Komodo National Park that will truly take your breath away, the morning tea/coffee views cannot be beaten!

surface intervals

Just before the first dive our experienced, friendly and professional dive crew will get everyone together and give an informative and thorough dive briefing. They will provide you with all the information you need about currents, marine life and safety procedures. Then your group's guide will discuss more personal preferences with you separately. Whether you prefer macro or mantas, just let our eagle-eyed guides know what you'd like to see.

The whole day is then spent in the park. Individual lunches are served after the second dive. If you have any dietary requirements do not hesitate to let us know. We can organise delicious vegetarian, vegan and gluten free food.

You then arrive back at the resort in time for a tasty snack, a well earned cold drink and the beautiful sunset. The boat sets out for diving between 6.30am and 7.15 am depending on where we are planning to dive that day and is back at the resort 4.30-5.30pm

safety procedures

safety

Your safety is our number one priority and we have a whole host of procedures in place to ensure it.

All of our dive staff are EFR and CPR trained. We have first aid & oxygen on the boats to use in case of emergency.

All of our dive boats are equipped with marine radios, GPS, depth gauges, fire fighting equipment, life jackets & life-rafts.

safety procedures

no fly time

Plan for a minimum of 18 hours no fly time, as recommended by PADI and DAN. Our dives are usually finished by 3pm at the latest, which means you would be safe to fly the next day after 11am - this also works well with our transfer boat.

No Decompression Limits (NDL)

For those of you diving with your own dive computer, we ask that you inform your dive guide when you have 10 minutes of NDL's remaining so that they can start to shallow up and extend the bottom time for your group. Decompression diving is not allowed.

Nearest Hospital

There are two hospitals in Labuan Bajo town - a Siloam hospital and the local public hospital. In case of emergency we will contact Siloam Hospital. The hospital is over an hours boat ride away from the resort and about two hours by boat from the National Park. We do have speed boats to use in an emergency that reduce this time.

Nearest Recompression Chamber

There is a recompression chamber with trained hyperbaric doctors at Siloam Hospital in Labuan Bajo.

Any diving related emergency will be taken directly to this hospital.

insurance

Insurance is mandatory for diving with us in the Komodo National Park. This is due to the remoteness of the area and limited specialist medical facilities in Labuan Bajo.

We can organise a short term DAN insurance on arrival at the resort.

skills refresher

If you have not dived in a year or longer then we offer a free skills refresher at the start of your first dive with us. This will include a review of the equipment set up, pre-dive safety check and some underwater skills.

our boats

waves

The design of our boats prioritise comfort, space and safety - this is the best and only way to experience the stunning beauty of the Komodo National Park! We have three custom designed dive boats that are perfect for handling the occasional swell of the park and the strong currents. They are designed not only with safety in mind, but with everyone's enjoyment and comfort.

Each dive boat has a shaded seating area where you can enjoy your breakfast and lunch. The upstairs is a sundeck area equipped with bean bags for you to relax on between dives - soaking up the sun and taking in the stunning views. The dive deck area of all the boats is spacious making it easy to kit up, and our crew are always there to assist you. There is also a marine toilet onboard.

birostris boat

introducing the boats

The Birostris - The original boat of the Scuba Junkie Komodo fleet was named after Mobula (Manta) Birostris, commonly referred to as the giant, or oceanic, manta ray. Since the initial design the Birostris underwent a refurbishment in 2020, as part of our dedication to always providing the highest quality experience for our guests.

The Alfredi - The second boat to be designed for Scuba Junkie is the Alfredi, named after the Molula (Manta) Alfredi, more commonly known as the reef manta.

The Xiphias - The newest addition to the Scuba Junkie fleet, this boat joined us in 2020. The name Xiphias is the name for the genus of the swordfish family, which given how fast she cuts through the water is a very fitting name!
