What’s the course schedule like?

waves

One of the many great things about the PADI Advanced Open Water Course is that it requires no classroom time! There are 5 dives to complete and each dive has an accompanying chapter in the Adventures in Diving PADI book. Read through the chapter and complete the knowledge review at the end, your instructor will then go through the knowledge review with you and explain and expand on the subjects.

The course is 5 dives conducted over 2 days (so time for a cheeky fun dive if you complete your knowledge reviews in time ;) ) and the dives you do on each day will depend on your choices and the conditions of the dive site - the deep dive is usually done as the first dive on the second day.

What are the adventure dive options and what do they involve?

Any of these adventure dives can also be counted towards the related PADI specialty!

Required for Advanced certification:

Deep Dive - The PADI deep dive certifies you to go to 30m. The training will look at the safety elements of diving deeper, how depth can affect you, how to plan a deep dive and how it affects your air consumption. You will also get to see how depth affects colours and pressure.

Underwater Navigation - This dive will teach you how to use a compass in relation to diving, some basic ways to estimate distance underwater, and how to use natural navigation during a dive. This is a great way to learn a bit about how to feel orientated underwater.

other options to choose from

Choose any 3 of the following:

Peak performance buoyancy - This is a fantastic adventure dive to do and one that many students say is the most helpful! We highly recommend completing this adventure dive as part of your training. This option provides you with information about how to improve your trim (body position) in the water, how to improve your air consumption, and how to feel more confident in the water - all through playing some fun games underwater!

Drift diving - What better place than Komodo to do a drift diving adventure dive? Learn techniques for how to control yourself during a drift, recognizing currents from the surface, how to enter the dive during a strong drift and how to deploy and surface marker buoy!

Fish ID - Struggling to know the difference between all the different reef fish? The PADI Fish ID adventure dive will look at the ways that we ID different bony fish, from looking at their body shape to their behaviours.

Underwater Naturalist - This adventure dive looks at how to tell the difference between bony fish, invertebrates, or plants. Use the incredible diversity of the reefs of Komodo to expand your knowledge of what exactly it is you are looking at

Search and Recovery - A more technical option, this adventure dive will go into detail about how to find lost objects using different search patterns, practice tying knots underwater, and how to recover heavy items using a lift bag. This is an interesting dive for those who like to explore the more technical side of diving.

Boat diving - This adventure dive will look at the different techniques used to dive from a boat!

Digital underwater imaging* - This is a popular adventure dive for those who want to learn how to record their diving memories! This dive will take you through the basics of taking photos and video underwater, how to set up a camera for taking it underwater, and then how to edit the photos afterwards.

*Underwater camera rental not included in the course price.

frequently asked questions

What dive sites will I do during the course?

The dive sites will depend a little on what adventure dives you plan to do. If you choose some of the more skills-based dives (eg. Search and Recovery) then the instructor will require a more sheltered and sandy dive site. However, the majority of the adventure dives can be completed on any site in the park and you’ll still get to experience all that the Komodo National Park has to offer!

Will I see mantas during the course?

Yes! In fact, if you choose the right adventure dive you’ll learn how to tell the difference between the different species of manta ray!

I’ve only just finished my Open Water Course, should I get more experience before doing the Advanced Course?

The Advanced course is designed to be accessible for any level of diver, whether you have 4 dives or 100 dives. It can easily be adapted so that any level of diver will feel more skilled and more confident once the course has finished.
